Commonwealth countries in Africa say they are working together to recover millions of dollars by seizing assets from criminals and corrupt officials.
The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Partnering towards assets recovery and its return’
The Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa took place at the Transcorp Hilton, Monday, May 14, 2018, Abuja

Secretary General, Commonwealth of Nations, Patricia Scotland; EFCC, Lawyer, Barr, Wahab Shittu; & Chairman, Steering Committee Movement Against Corruption, DrJoe Okei Odumakin.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland  addressed the anti-corruption conference on its first morning. She said, “Corruption is poisonous, corrosive, vicious and an enemy of sustainable development. It destroys people’s confidence in their leaders, their politicians and their country. Countless times we have heard how people feel when a system is corrupt, and their rights can’t be protected because they’re not rich enough or don’t have the right connections. They feel the system has beaten them.

“That’s why we, in the Secretariat, work with governments to fight corruption. As well as setting up the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre in Botswana in 2013, we have established the Office of Civil and Criminal Justice Reform (OCCJR), which was welcomed by the heads of government at their biennial meeting last month, so member states can get assistance across the Commonwealth.”

The Secretariat has provided targeted assistance to Commonwealth nations. It has been active in practical training and development support for national anti-corruption agencies, focussing on Africa and the Caribbean, in accordance with the sustainable development goals.

The annual conferences act as a focal point for anti-corruption networks and provide a forum through which government representatives can peer-review a country’s anti-corruption efforts as well as share good practice and learning.

Dr Joe Okei Odumakin Special Address at This Year Worker’s Day Celebration

dr

Dr Joe Okei Odumakin has described Nigerian workers, as the lifeline of the Nigerian economy and the greatest asset required by Nigeria, to attain its desired level of productivity, as a Nation. Dr Odumakin, made the statement, during her Special Address at this year Worker’s Day celebration, jointly organised by the Lagos State chapters of the Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

She lauded the resilience of Nigerian workers. She further stated, that the Labour Movement, must join efforts towards ensuring Restructuring of the country, which she said, remains the only viable option towards redirecting the country, from a monolithic economy, to one, which encourages diversification and gives power to the federating units, to explore mineral resources and other available opportunities, thereby creating more jobs and increasing productivity. While commending the Lagos State

Government, for the regular and prompt payment of workers in the State’s Civil service urged the FG to implement the 56,500 minimum wage. She also called on Nigerian workers, to see their participation in the forthcoming elections, as a priority. She urged all workers to get their permanent voters cards and take the Centre stage, in determining how the country is governed henceforth.
